Our herd was established in 2001 in an attempt to utilise the grassland on our game bird based farm near Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk. When foot and mouth disease devastated so many farmers, we felt it was the right time to start a livestock enterprise and looked to the Angus as a ideal breed. The breed suits our farming ethos, as its a popular native breed, which is docile, easy calving and has premium commercial value.
Foundation bloodlines were purchased privately in 2001 and 2002 with many females then being sourced from the Hayrish dispersal sale in 2003 as well as a few private purchases from the Curzon herd of Messrs Moss.
In 2002 our first stock bull was purchased in a shared partnership for 9000gns. Blelack Blackberet stood champion in Perth and has produced great females which are correct, good mothers and easy calvers. Many of our show success stories go back to Black Beret.
In 2006 we purchased the yearling bull Nightingale Panmure privately from the Robertson family for £8000. Bought initially for his length, scale and power, he also combined great performance figures so naturally made a great sire for Blackberet daughters. Panmure has had a lasting effect on the herd and has produced show winners for us. He is still working in the herd today.
We also run two Panmure bred sons, one of which was reserve male champion at the 2009 National Show and in early 2010 we purchased Balmachie Jath Eric privately from Messrs J F Lascelles, Carnoustie, Angus for £8000.
Cow numbers currently total 100, with the aim of increasing to a 120-cow herd with the best female replacements and offspring from a recent flushing programme. Females are now being offered for sale as well as young bulls fit for both pedigree and commercial herds available at Society sales and privately off farm.
The herd is closed with the exception of buying in high health status stock sires which are routinely health checked and vaccinated before being allowed to run with the herd. We are also in the process of starting a high health scheme. The herd is also weight recorded.
We regularly exhibit at shows including the South Suffolk, Hadliegh, East of England, Suffolk, Norfolk, South of England, The Royal, Edenbridge and Oxted, The Newbury and the National Show and have had success at these shows.
